Bermuda and Onion
Cuisine Type: Italian
Location: Bukit Bintang
Description:
A recent rebranding exercise has seen Bermuda and Onion remove pork from its menu, and while we will mourn the departure of its delicious non-halal dishes, the upside is there is still much, much more to scintillate in the menu. Specialities ranging from flams (the signature special of sister outlet Flams) variously garnished, and panfried duck liver, to the oven-baked lamb rack and home made duck ravioli, more than satisfy, but just in case you need more persuasion, the cocktails are also sizzlingly good. Leave the kids at home.![]()
IL Divo Ristorante Italiano
Cuisine Type: Italian
Location: Ampang, Behind Hock Choon Supermarket
Description:
It was a dark day for Italian food lovers in Hartamas when Il Divo decamped to Ampang and it’s easy to understand why. Il Divo’s unwavering commitment to serving truly authentic Italian cuisine has earned it the accolade of becoming one of KL’s best Italian eateries. Eschewing the well-trodden route taken by many restaurateurs (spaghetti Bolognese, carbonara, pizza margarita - you know the drill), Il Divo’s menu is strongly influenced by owner and host Vincenzo’s Sicilian background, and signature dishes include the bresaola with rocket, gnocchi alla Sorrentina, and the truly succulent panfried lamb racks and black angus tenderloin steak, all consistently well prepared and served with irreproachable Italian hospitality by Vincenzo himself. A superb wine list and relatively fair prices make this eatery one of the stand out additions to KL’s restaurant scene. ![]()
Le Bouchon
Cuisine Type: French
Location: Bukit Bintang
Description:
Mention French food, and Le Bouchon comes to mind, not least because it has become the stalwart of French cuisine in KL. The rustic, deliberately provincial mood of the decor perfectly juxtaposes the unpretentious but always satisfying cuisine. Highlights include the homemade terrines and duck confit but since serving sizes are generous, sweet-toothed diners are advised not to over-indulge before the finishing line is in sight. An excellent, predominantly French wine menu provides a perfect counterpart to the food. Bon appetit!![]()
Max@iHaus
Cuisine Type: Modern European
Location: Off Jalan Bukit Bintang
Description:
This totally charming and full of character restaurant, with the architecture and culinary art combined Max@iHaus is a treat to dine on the comfort of the imported furniture, and soak up the experience of being surrounded by the beautiful ambient and tasty food, that never disappoints. The seafood is exquisite, the wagyu beef top drawer and the lamb arguably the best in KL. Max also well known for his knowledge and collection in wine and boasts a wine list from all over the world. But the real treat and what makes Max among the city’s top chefs is when he goes ‘off menu! ![]()
Planter Jim's Thai
Cuisine Type: Thai
Location: Bangsar
Description:
Despite being one of the older restaurants in the area, Planter Jim inarguably remains the best Thai eatery, and it owes its popularity as much to its consistent food standards as its superb food. The crispy shredded duck pancakes with plum sauce and spring onions are excellent, so who cares if it's not really Thai? We also unreservedly recommend the green curry, four-angle bean salad (the best in KL), Thai laksa, and the squid fried rice with loads of chilli padi bombs. Pretty much everything on the menu is worth a try and the Thai chefs should be praised for continuing to do a good job week after week, and year after year.![]()
Rama V Fine Thai Cuisine
Cuisine Type: Thai
Location: KL City
Description:
This oasis of Thai hospitality in the city has been quietly feeding punters in the know for more than ten years and it continues to be relevant, not least because its setting - verdant gardens and a pond flanked by statues of Buddha - gives diners the inviting illusion of being far from the madding crowd. The food has been somewhat Malaysianised but is nonetheless better than many. Try the mango salad and the crispy garoupa with Thai chilli sauce: both are signature dishes that are consistently good. Other staples include the tomyam river prawns in coconut and otak otak which, whilst not necessarily inspiring, are competently prepared. Not a place for eat-and-run meals, Rama V is ideal when you need a place to leave your worries at the door.
Look out for their Jazz Band now playing every Friday and Saturday from 10.30pm onwards.![]()
The Magnificent Fish & Chips Bar
Cuisine Type: English/Pub, Fish
Location: Bukit Bintang
Description:
I’m a sucker for real English fish and chips. By this I mean the kind served on newspaper, with enough batter to drown an African village, doused with enough vinegar to have your gastric juices screaming bloody murder. Naturally, the only acceptable sides are real chunky chips and mushy peas. Its ridiculous name notwithstanding, this is the best place to get real fish and chips in the Klang Valley, and it’s well worth the RM100 for two, and possibly even the irreparable vinegar overdose damage to your stomach lining. ![]()
The Social
Cuisine Type: Local Malaysian, Western/Grill
Location: Bangsar | Bukit Bintang
Description:
In an area that has been notoriously high in restaurant and bar turnovers, The Social has endured, most notably because the service standards are generally good, prices are fair, and the food is well above average. An added attraction is the pool tables. With the recent opening of a sister outlet in Changkat Bukit Bintang, townies can enjoy the myriad attractions of the Social without making the trek across town. Thoughtfully designed and featuring a suitably captivating menu, there is much to recommend this perennially loved outlet, but why take our word for it? Go and discover it yourself. Again and again. ![]()
The Yogitree
Cuisine Type: Local Malaysian, Organic, Western/Grill
Location: Gardens, Mid Valley
Description:
There's not a lot you can find wrong with the Yogi Tree: it's cosy, serves healthy organic food that is also generally delicious, and a little shop adjacent to the eatery affords some tasteful (and politically correct) pre-or-post prandial retail therapy. Already a hot favourite amongst the ladies who lunch, this restaurant is about to become a whole lot more popular when KL-ites get wind of it. Expect such delights as crumbly salmon fish cakes, superbly piquant Thai beef noodles, and homemade pastas, all made with the best organic ingredients. Traditional English afternoon tea replete with scones, finger sandwiches and mini cakes is also a highlight at this gem of a restaurant. We love!! ![]()
TwentyOne Kitchen & Bar
Cuisine Type: Modern European, Western/Grill
Location: Bukit Bintang
Description:
The brainchild of erstwhile Telawi Street Bistro enfants terribles Richard and Danny, Twenty One has rapidly become one of the haunts of choice for the fast set, not least because the boys have entertainment down to a fine art, and charm – and humour - in spades (to wit: cheekily named cocktails like Better Than Badoogie!). Bistro-style cuisine is more than competently prepared and served in a minimalist but comfortable setting. Expect such classics as roasted fresh asparagus, mushroom risotto and crispy skin salmon, all served with a smile and a flourish, and remember to adjourn upstairs for post-prandial drinks and dancing. Oh, and tell mama not to wait up; it’s going to be a late one.![]()
